He

He (/ˈh/, unstressed /i/) is a masculine third-person, singular personal pronoun (subjective case) in Modern English, as well as being a personal pronoun in Middle English.

Usage

People

"He" can be used as a substitution of a male's name.

Animals

"He" and "she" are often used to refer to domesticated animals and sometimes non-domesticated animals of the respective sex.

Gender neutral

A study has shown that "there was a rather extended period of time in the history of the English language when the choice of a supposedly masculine personal pronoun (him) said nothing about the gender or sex of the referent."

The use of "he" to refer to a person of unknown gender was often prescribed by manuals of style and school textbooks from the early 18th century until around the 1960s, an early example of which is Ann Fisher's 1745 grammar book "A New Grammar".

  • A good student always does his homework.
  • If someone asks you for help, give it to him.
  • When a customer argues, always agree with him.
  • This may be compared to usage of the word man to humans in general.

    He (short story)

"He" is a short story by American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. Written August 1925, it was first published in Weird Tales, September 1926.

    Plot summary

The story tells of an unnamed narrator, who has moved from New England to New York City and greatly regretted it. One night, while wandering an older part of Greenwich Village, he happens upon a man strangely dressed in garments from the eighteenth century. The man offers to show the narrator the secrets of the town.

After bringing the narrator to his home, the man tells him the story of a squire who bargained with Native Americans for the secrets of their rituals concerning time and space which were practiced on the land where that squire had recently taken up residence. After learning their secrets, the squire gave the Native Americans "monstrous bad rum," so that within a week all of them were dead and only he was left with the knowledge. The man then proceeds to show the narrator visions of the city's past and future so terrifying that the narrator begins to scream wildly. The screams rouse the spirits of the Native Americans to take vengeance on the man, who is that same squire from 1768.

    Ge (Cyrillic)

Ghe or Ge г; italics: Г г) is a letter of the Cyrillic script. It is also known in some languages as He. It commonly represents the voiced velar plosive /ɡ/, like the pronunciation of g in "go".

Ghe is generally romanized using the Latin letter G; but when romanizing Belarusian, Ukrainian and Rusyn, the Latin letter H is used.

    History

The Cyrillic letter Ghe was derived directly from the Greek letter Gamma γ), but the lowercase Ghe is a small version of the capital letter.

In the Early Cyrillic alphabet its name was глаголи (ɡlaɡoli), meaning "speak".

In the Cyrillic numeral system, Ge had a numerical value of 3.

    Usage in Slavic languages

    South Slavic

In standard Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian the letter Ghe represents a voiced velar plosive /ɡ/, except when it is devoiced to [k] word-finally or before a voiceless consonant.

    Russian

In standard Russian, Ghe represents the voiced velar plosive /ɡ/, except when it is devoiced to [k] word-finally or before a voiceless consonant, and it represents /ɡʲ/ before a palatalizing vowel. In the Southern Russian dialect, the sound becomes the velar fricative /ɣ/, and sometimes the glottal fricative /ɦ/ in regions bordering Belarus and Ukraine.

    He

    by: Glen Campbell

He can turn the ties and calm the angry sea
He alone besides who writes a symphony
He lights every star that makes a darkness bright
He keeps watch all through each long and lonely night
He still finds the time to hear a child's first prayer
Saint or sinner call and always find him there
Though it makes him sad to see the way we live he'll always say I forgive
(He can grab a wish or make a dream come true)
He can paint the clouds and turn the gray to blue)
He alone knows where to find a rainbow's end
He alone can see what lies beyond the bend
He can touch a tree and turn the leaves to gold
He knows every lie that you and I have told
Though it makes him sad to see the way we live he'll always say I forgive
